THE POGUES ~ "DIRTY OLD TOWN";

That was the final CHUM Top 30 Chart. The next week, June 14 1986, the following notice appeared in The Star in place of the chart;
"For almost 10 years the CHUM singles chart has occupied this space in The Star. The chart, here and elsewhere, has been synonymous with rock radio in Toronto.
But times change, and so has CHUM. We at The Star have enjoyed the partnership and we wish our good friends at 1050 both good fortune and tons of happy listeners"

CHUM AM had been the top rock/pop station in Toronto since 1957. However by 1986 ratings had slipped considerably due to changing musical tastes and the better sound quality of FM stereo stations like CFNY and Q107 as well as their own sister station CHUM FM. In 1986 CHUM therefore announced they were changing formats to become an Adult Contemporary, then an Oldies Station, while keeping the CHUM call letters. In 2001 in the face of continued poor ratings the format was changed to all sports talk format billing itself as "The Team 1050". This was also a failure and led to a switch back to CHUM Oldies in the next year.

CHUM SWITCHES TO OLDIES;

In 2009 the station retired the CHUM call sign and ran the station as an "all news" station by simply running a simulcast of the sound feed from their CP 24 TV all news broadcast. This led to some odd problems as TV announcers discussed video images that radio listeners could obviously not see, or aired patches of dead air. By that time there were few listeners left anyway since Toronto already had an all news headlines and talk station in 680 News Talk. It was a sad end to what had been Toronto's most popular and influential music station for over thirty years. Earlier this year another format change was announced and the station, now called "TSN Radio" was returned to it's All Sports Talk format. Since there is already a long standing sports talk station in Toronto there are serious doubts it will work out this time any better than before.
